Most of us use “traditional” [tank] water heaters that heat – and then reheat – the water in the tank repeatedly. If you can manage to set aside some of your savings to buy a tankless heater – or if you can buy one at your local super hardware store, on a 12 or 18 month, no interest promotion, then it’s well worth the investment.

Tankless water heaters, on the average, will save you 50% in typical costs over traditional tank heaters.

In the meantime, a few, easy tips will help you not only save energy and savings, but also help you practice a few safety tips as well.

  • Avoid burns. Set your water heater no hotter than “Normal” year round. The “Hot” setting is dangerous to use with children or elderly individuals in the house, plus the savings are about 3-5% for every 10-degree reduction.
  • “Economize” your water usage. Take shorter showers. Consider using a leave-in conditioner, which can also provide nutrients for your hair, while shortening your shower time.
  • Annual water heater maintenance. Your water heater will last longer and perform better if you drain and flush it annually. This is especially true if the water in your area has a lot of minerals. A water softener, if practical, can prolong tank life, as well as the life of your clothing…all of which add up to additional savings.
