Save Energy by Understanding Your Central AC System

Question: Doesn’t it use more energy to turn up my central AC when I leave because then my system has to work harder to cool off when I return?

Answer: No-
when you leave for more than several hours it’s more cost effective to turn your AC up several degrees. Your system will run longer when you get home, but it won’t be running all day so it’s still using less energy.

Another way to look at this is your system comes on every time the temperature in your home rises. If it’s very hot outside your system is going to work hard all day long to keep the warm air pumped out of your home.  If you turn your AC up several degrees before leaving your home in the morning, your system won’t have to work all day to keep your house cool. When you return in the evening, the temperature outside has begun to fall and it’ll be easier for your system to pump out all the warm air at once, rather than keeping it cool and kicking on and off all day.
