Myth #1 – Turning Lights Off and On Uses More Electric
Untrue - The power surge you hear about when you turn on a light is so quick and uses so little energy that it’s barely noticeable. It could never use as much energy as leaving the lights on would because it lasts for only a fraction of a section. If you’re concerned with saving energy, you should always turn your lights out if you leave the room.
Myth #2 – Turning Lights Off and On Frequently Will Shorten the Bulbs Life
Untrue - Flicking an incandescent bulb on and off won’t affect it’s life so it’s still better to turn the light out if you leave the room.
CFL bulbs, however, work differently. Turning them off and on can affect their life, but for most homes the damage is minimal. If you use CFL bulbs you should turn them off if you’re leaving the room for more than 15 minutes.
CFL bulbs are recommended for use in fixtures that you use for 15 minutes or more.
