If you don’t have the money to upgrade to an inline water heater, here are some tips to keep your current water heater bill down.

Use an insulating water heater blanket.

Fix any leaky faucets you might have.

Turn your water heater off when you leave town for more than a few days.

Turn down the thermostat. You don’t need your water burning you. If you’re mixing a lot of cold water with your hot water to make your shower bearable you could probably stand to have it turned down some.

Use a timer. If your water heater was made before 1998, use a timer so your water heater isn’t heating water all the time. Use it like you would your programmable thermostat. Turned on when you wake up, off when you leave, on when you return and off when you go to bed.

Insulate the room where you keep your water heater. If your water heater is in the garage, keep the door closed as much as possible.

Use a drain recovery system. This system recycles heat from the water flowing down the drain to preheat the water entering the heater.
