A clothesline is always a good way to cut back on dryer costs, however many people can’t use a line because of where they live or they simply don’t want people to see their clothes hanging out.

If you can’t use a clothesline use these tips to get the most efficiency out of your clothes dryer.

A Fast Spin Cycle is an Efficient Spin Cycle
Use a fast spin cycle. The more water your clothes have in them when you transfer them to the dryer, the harder and longer your dryer will have to run. Using a fast spin cycle will get rid of most of that water in the washer. Set your washer on the fastest spin cycle and you’ll have to use your dryer less.

Shake, Shake
Shake out your clothes after washing, but before you put them in the dryer. Do this to untangle and unwrap them and it will allow them to dry better and faster.

Be Careful of Overloading
Make sure you aren’t overloading your dryer. A dryer that is too full can’t circulate the warm air and it takes longer to dry.

Separate, Separate, Separate
Separate your heavy items and your light items. Light items will dry faster and shouldn’t be using up space and energy while the heavy items are still drying.

Dry Loads of Clothes Back to Back
This helps your dryer use heat that is left over from the previous load so it doesn’t have to heat up again. It will dry faster and save energy.

With Friends Like Lint, Who Needs Enemies?
Clean the lint filter every time you use your dryer. If you do not clean it regularly the lint filter can get clogged and increase your drying time and energy usage.
Lint can also catch fire and is a major safety hazard.

Clean Your Dryer Exhaust or Open a Window
Clean your dryer exhaust often. If you don’t have a dryer exhaust open a window in your laundry room when your dryer is running.
